Occupying a small segment of the desolate desert just outside of the city of Marrakesh, the Gurrugal House stands strong and proud. The Marrakesh-Palmeraie is scattered with an array of palm trees and sand-covered hills as far as the eye can see, and within it, the Gurrugal House embodies solitude and fortitude. Designed for Morocco’s famous contemporary calligraphy artist, Noureddine Daifallah, the dwelling is an art form in itself.
Blending in with its landscape, its bare exterior doesn’t give away the secrets it holds. The single storey residence is an exploration of not only the client, but its location, boasting an oasis of palm trees and shallow waters in its core contrasted by a strong, linear composure with heavy foundations.

The location is additionally reflected and celebrated within the materiality of the Gurrugal House, with the weather and heat conditions of the Marrakesh-Palmeraie consequently being taken into consideration.

Beige rendered concrete walls, travertine covered floors, and porcelain marble tiles contrast against the softness and naturalness of their surroundings, whilst simultaneously providing a cooling sensation against the unforgiving heat of the Moroccan sun.
The exploration of the client extends into the architectural spatial aspects of the Gurrugal House. Each room becomes a unique experience, heightening human emotion through perspective and scale through the use of large-scale windows and sky lights, sculpted using raw materials and minimal furnishings facilitates, evokes and heightens the senses as one makes their journey through the occupancy.
LOCATION & CONCEPT INSPIRATION
I visited Morocco on the Billy Blue design trip in September, 2019 and immediately fell in love with Marrakesh.
Although it’s not the capital of Morocco, it’s the most visited city within the country. Marrakesh is also known as the ‘red city’ - the earthy tones of the ground, dust, architecture and artworks pay homage to this.
After visiting Morocco, I was so in love and inspired by its architecture and design that I decided that it would be the perfect location for the Gurrugal House.
LOCATION
Marrakesh-Palmeraie, Marrakesh, Morocco
I had the pleasure of visiting the Marrakesh-Palmeraie, also known as the desert palms or palm grove, towards the end of the Billy Blue design trip. We completed an 18km bicycle ride through the groves and I couldn't help but notice the vast, bare grounds that held an oasis of palm trees that seemingly went on forever.

The Gurrugal House will blend in with the desert and stand out among the palm trees. It is located close enough to the city for commercial needs but far enough away and reclusive enough for one to feel completely at peace in the palm grove's tranquil atmosphere.
THE CLIENT
Noureddine Daifallah
Noureddine Daifallah is a calligraphy artist. Born in 1960 in Marrakech, he still lives and works as a professor of the fine arts in Morocco. He works with traditional Arabic calligraphy with a contemporary interpretation, therefore breathing new life into its noble artform.
Playing with letter formation evokes emotion from the script. Arabic calligraphy has a long history with the calligrapher being held in high status within the community and Daifallah has modernised this age old tradition, opening a new chapter.

Noureddine Daifallah is the perfect client for the Gurrugal House - it would allow him to continue to reside in his city of bith and work in the fine arts. The Gurrugal House has been designed so that it becomes an extension of Daifallah's identity, whilst facilitating his creativity in a serene environment.
